African Union monitoring political developments in Kenya

By  |

The Chairperson of the African Union (AU) Commission, Moussa Faki Mahamat, is closely following the situation in Kenya ahead of the fresh Presidential election.

The Union says it remains keen on political developments in the Country especially the decision by NASA flag bearer Raila Odinga and his Deputy Kalonzo Musyoka to withdraw from the Presidential election slated for 26th of August.

In a statement, the Chairperson called on all stakeholders to exercise leadership during this crucial period of Kenya’s democracy to ensure the successful completion of the electoral process and contribute to the consolidation of democracy in Kenya and the preservation of peace and stability in the country.

Faki stressed that AU is ready to take any initiative deemed appropriate to facilitate the peaceful conclusion of the electoral process.
He said AU has deployed an Observer Mission in Kenya since September 2017, to support the electoral process and assist towards its peaceful and successful conclusion.

The concerns come barely days after Raila said he will not participate in the fresh Presidential election saying concerns he has raised with the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission have not been addressed.

NASA is agitating for reforms in the Commission saying they some officials among them CEO Ezra Chiloba must vacate office if the election is to be free and fair.

And while IEBC maintains that Raila has not officially withdrawn, and that the election will go on as scheduled, it was a reprieve for Third way Alliance Presidential candidate Ekuru Aukot after the High Court ruled that he should contest in the election.

IEBC now says all the Presidential candidates who contested in the August election will be on the ballot, even as it remains unclear on the next course of action by NASA which has threatened to hold anti-IEBC demonstrations every day starting Monday.
